EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the distinguished visage of David Murray, 2nd Earl Mansfield (1727-1796), a renowned statesman and diplomat of the late 18th century. Born as the eldest son of John Murray, 4th Earl of Dunmore, and Anne Dormer, he was known as Lord Stormont until his father's death in 1766, when he inherited the title and estates of the Earl of Mansfield. Mansfield's political career began in earnest when he was appointed as a Member of Parliament for Aylesbury in 1761. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a Privy Counsellor in 1766 and Lord President of the Council in 1770. In 1770, Mansfield was also appointed Lord Chief Justice of the King's Bench, a position he held until 1780. During his tenure as Lord Chief Justice, Mansfield presided over several landmark cases, including the famous Somersett's Case, which established that a slave brought into England could not be held in bondage. In 1782, Mansfield was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, a position he held until 1794. During his time in Ireland, he worked to quell rebellions and improve the administration of justice. Mansfield's diplomatic skills were also put to use in 1784 when he was sent as an envoy to the Court of St. James's to negotiate a treaty with the United States. Although the treaty was ultimately unsuccessful, Mansfield's efforts helped to maintain peaceful relations between Britain and the United States. This portrait, likely taken during Mansfield's time as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, captures the wisdom and gravitas of a man who played a pivotal role in shaping the political landscape of late 18th-century Britain and Ireland. With his piercing gaze and impeccably dressed attire, Mansfield exudes an air of authority and sophistication, making this a truly captivating historical image.
