EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a crowd of onlookers gathered in front of Thessaloniki's iconic White Tower, examining the remnants of the German Zeppelin LZ85. The image is a poignant reminder of the historical events that unfolded in this Mediterranean city during the First World War. On the fateful day of 5th May 1916, the German airship LZ85, also known as the "Salonika," was brought down over Thessaloniki by the anti-aircraft guns of the British battleship HMS Agamemnon. The zeppelin, which had been on a mission to bomb Allied targets in the region, was ultimately unsuccessful in its objective and instead became a symbol of the destructive power of the war. The wreckage of the LZ85 was later transported back to Barrow in Furness, England, where it was displayed as a war trophy. However, in this photograph, we see the remains of the zeppelin frame, which had been brought to Thessaloniki and displayed in front of the White Tower, a historic landmark that has stood guard over the city's harbor since the 15th century. The image is a testament to the historical significance of Thessaloniki, a city that has witnessed many pivotal moments in world history. The crowd of onlookers, their expressions a mixture of curiosity and awe, serve as a reminder of the enduring power of history to captivate and inspire us.
