In May 1940, just a month before the Battle of Britain, a small group of local Defence

In May 1940, just a month before the Battle of Britain, a small group of local Defence Volunteers from Nottingham and the surrounding districts, held a meeting in the village of Gunthorpe to solve a very important problem -the defence of the Inland waterways.
They formed the Trent River Patrol, Nottinghamshire Home Guard. This battalion has increased in numbers during the past two and a half years and they now control over 98 miles of river. A number of motor launches are staged at various intervals along this huge stretch of water and their duties include maintaining lines of communication, seeing that goods traffic goes through with food, army stores, petrol etc and to prevent any vessel falling in to enemy hands.
Picture shows: The lock gates open and the launch and barge make their entry.
