EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to the bustling Liverpool Street station in August 1911. The image captures a unique perspective under the Pindar Street bridge, providing a glimpse into platforms 1 to 4. In the foreground, we are drawn to an intriguing sight - an inspection pit located right next to platform number 3. This pit was essential for maintaining and inspecting trains during that era. A train destined for Palace Gates can be seen occupying platform number 3, ready to embark on its journey. The scene is filled with various elements of railway history. To the left of the frame stands a coal wagon, reminding us of the importance of coal as a fuel source for steam engines at that time. Behind it lies a timber coaling stage, where workers would load coal onto passing locomotives. The impressive railway bridge above provides both structural support and aesthetic appeal to this historic setting. It symbolizes not only human ingenuity but also serves as a reminder of how rail transport revolutionized travel and transportation during this period. Liverpool Street station itself exudes grandeur and significance as one of London's major railway hubs since its opening in 1874. This print offers us a fascinating window into early twentieth-century rail travel, transporting us back in time when steam trains ruled the tracks and stations were vibrant centers of activity.
