This photograph, taken in 1893 by John Charles Burrow, offers a glimpse into the past of East Pool Mine in Illogan, Cornwall. The image captures the Tram Road Bridge at the 170 fathom level, a vital component of the mine's Victorian-era infrastructure. The bridge, constructed of rough-hewn timbers, spans a narrow, flooded section of the mine. A trolley, suspended from a cable system, traverses the bridge, carrying men and materials to and from the workings deep below the surface. The trolley, pulled by a winch or engine located at either end of the bridge, was a common method of transportation in deep-level mines during the Victorian era. The mine, which operated from the late 18th century until the 1920s, was renowned for its rich copper and tin deposits. The men in this photograph, dressed in heavy coats and hats, would have been part of the workforce that labored in the dark, damp conditions of the mine, extracting valuable minerals.
