Charlestown harbour and shipping, Cornwall. Around 1914

Charlestown harbour looking out to sea. The harbour is full of a mixture of both steam and sail shipping. SS Westdale on the east quay, (left of picture) is steel built and screw driven. She was built in South Shields in 1911 and owned in Liverpool. The schooner, Belmont, built in Whitstable in 1895 and owned in Faversham is alongside the west quay, (right of picture). Alongside the east quay is the steel built and screw driven SS Central, whose funnel and bridge structure can be seen through the masts and rigging. She was built and owned in Kiel in 1884. On the left, in front of the cottages, can be seen the covered gantry carrying tram rails and loading chutes of the underground tram way that carried China clay from the large clay dry a few hundred yards away and out of picture to load the ships. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the bustling scene at Charlestown harbour in Cornwall, around 1914. The picturesque harbor is teeming with a fascinating mix of steam and sail shipping vessels, showcasing the transition from traditional sailing ships to modern steam-powered ones. On the east quay, we see the impressive SS Westdale, a steel-built and screw-driven ship that was constructed in South Shields in 1911. Owned in Liverpool, she stands proudly as a symbol of technological advancement during this era. Alongside her on the west quay lies the beautiful schooner Belmont, built in Whitstable back in 1895 and owned in Faversham. Amidst the masts and rigging emerges another steel-built and screw-driven vessel called SS Central. This magnificent ship hails all the way from Kiel, Germany, having been built there in 1884. Its distinctive funnel and bridge structure peek through amidst the surrounding maritime elements. A unique feature visible on this photograph is a covered gantry situated on the left side of Charlestown harbour. This gantry serves as an essential part of an underground tramway system used for transporting China clay from a nearby dry facility to load onto ships for exportation. Preserved by photographer Herbert Hughes' skilled lensmanship, this snapshot offers us a glimpse into Charlestown's rich maritime history while highlighting its role as a vital hub for trade and transportation during that time period.
