Berlin Airlift cargo aeroplanes, 1948-9 C016 / 4233

Berlin Airlift cargo aeroplanes. US Navy R4D and US Air Force C-47 aircraft being unloaded at Berlins Tempelhof Airport during the Berlin Airlift of 1948-9. This was a response to the Berlin Blockade, an attempt by the Soviet Union to gain complete control of the German capital which had been divided between the USA, the UK, France, and the USSR following World War II. Over 200, 000 flights of cargo planes by the Western Allies over 15 months provided some 4700 tonnes of daily supplies, ensuring that the blockade failed. At peak times, cargo planes were landing every few minutes, with cargo unloaded rapidly to achieve swift turnaround times

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the intense activity at Berlin's Tempelhof Airport during the historic Berlin Airlift of 1948-9. The image showcases a fleet of cargo aeroplanes, including US Navy R4D and US Air Force C-47 aircraft, being unloaded by dedicated workers. This extraordinary operation was in response to the Soviet Union's attempt to gain control over divided post-war Berlin through a blockade. Over a span of 15 months, more than 200,000 flights were conducted by Western Allies, delivering an impressive daily supply of approximately 4,700 tonnes. These vital supplies ensured that the blockade ultimately failed and provided much-needed relief for the people of West Berlin. The scale and efficiency depicted in this photograph are truly remarkable. Cargo planes can be seen landing every few minutes while workers swiftly unload their precious contents. The dedication and hard work exhibited by these individuals played a crucial role in maintaining logistical support throughout this challenging period. As we observe this monochrome snapshot from history, it serves as a powerful reminder of human resilience amidst adversity. It symbolizes not only technological advancements but also international cooperation between Allied powers during one of the defining moments of the Cold War era. This iconic image stands as a testament to the triumph achieved through collective efforts and highlights how military air transport service became instrumental in shaping history.
