ELS launch pad, Guiana Space Centre

ELS launch pad, Guiana Space Centre. Diagram of the support services surrounding a rocket on the Ensemble de Lancement Soyouz (ELS) or Soyuz Launch Complex at Frances Guiana Space Centre, French Guiana. This launch pad is used by the European Space Agency (ESA). The first scheduled launches here will use Soyuz-2 rockets to deploy the first two Galileo IOV satellites on 20 October 2011. The rocket and payload are prepared using a Mobile Service Tower (upper right), and rolled onto the launch pad on rails. Piping provides fuel and there is a flame pit under the rocket. Construction took place from 2007 to 2011

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the ELS launch pad at the Guiana Space Centre, a remarkable engineering feat in French Guiana. The diagram beautifully illustrates the support services surrounding a rocket on the Soyuz Launch Complex, which is utilized by the esteemed European Space Agency (ESA). The image depicts the Mobile Service Tower positioned in the upper right corner, where both rocket and payload are meticulously prepared before being transported onto the launch pad via rails. The intricate piping system ensures a steady supply of fuel to power this extraordinary space craft. A flame pit lies beneath the rocket, ready to ignite its powerful engines and propel it into space. Construction of this cutting-edge facility took place from 2007 to 2011, marking an important milestone in space exploration during the 21st century. Notably, this particular launch pad was chosen for its inaugural mission on October 20th, 2011 – deploying two Galileo IOV satellites using Soyuz-2 rockets. The vividly colored illustration provides insight into various elements of this technological marvel: gantries towering above; colour-coded pipes indicating different functions; and railway tracks facilitating smooth transportation. This artwork captures both scientific precision and artistic flair. As we gaze upon this awe-inspiring image captured by Science Photo Library within a white background setting, we are reminded of humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge beyond Earth's boundaries.
