Gliese 229 system, artwork
Gliese 229 system. Computer artwork of the brown dwarf Gliese 229 b (Gl229 b, right) in orbit around its parent star, the red dwarf Gliese 229 (upper left). Gl229 b was the first brown dwarf to be directly imaged when it was found in 1995. A brown dwarf is an intermediate object between a gas giant planet (like Jupiter) and a star. Gl229 b has a mass between 20 and 50 times that of Jupiter, but is still too small to sustain the nuclear reactions characteristic of stars. These two dwarfs are about four billion miles apart, about the same distance between Pluto and our sun. The system lies around 19 light years from Earth in the constellation Lepus

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork showcases the Gliese 229 system, a mesmerizing celestial dance between a red dwarf star and its orbiting brown dwarf companion. The focal point of this print is Gliese 229 b (Gl229 b), the first-ever directly imaged brown dwarf discovered in 1995. Positioned to the right, Gl229 b stands as an intermediate object bridging the gap between gas giant planets like Jupiter and fully-fledged stars. With a mass ranging from 20 to 50 times that of Jupiter, Gl229 b remains too small to sustain nuclear reactions akin to stars. However, its presence adds an ethereal beauty to this cosmic portrait. Hovering above on the upper left corner is its parent star, the radiant red dwarf known as Gliese 229. Separated by approximately four billion miles - comparable to Pluto's distance from our sun - these two celestial bodies create a stunning juxtaposition against the backdrop of space. Located around 19 light years away in the Lepus constellation, this alien planetary system offers astronomers valuable insights into exoplanets and failed stars. The intricate details captured in this computer artwork invite us into an awe-inspiring realm where science meets artistry. It serves as a reminder of both humanity's insatiable curiosity about distant worlds and our capacity for creative expression through scientific exploration.
