ISS and the Moon C013 / 5149

ISS and the Moon. The International Space Station (ISS, upper left) is orbiting the Earth here at an altitude of around 390 kilometres. The Moon orbits the Earth at a distance of around 385, 000 kilometres, nearly 1000 times as far, but is far larger, being around 3480 kilometres across compared to the ISS width of around 100 metres. The ISS takes a few minutes to cross the sky, orbiting the Earth every 92 minutes. The Moon rises and sets daily due to the rotation of the Earth, taking just over 27 days to complete its orbit. Photographed on 4 January 2012 from Houston, Texas, USA

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the incredible contrast between two celestial bodies - the International Space Station (ISS) and the Moon. Taken on 4 January 2012 from Houston, Texas, USA, this image captures the ISS orbiting Earth at an altitude of approximately 390 kilometers. In comparison, the Moon orbits our planet at a staggering distance of around 385,000 kilometers. Despite its vast distance from Earth, the Moon appears significantly larger than the ISS in this photograph. With a diameter of about 3480 kilometers compared to the ISS's width of merely 100 meters, it is clear that size does not always correlate with proximity. The ISS gracefully traverses across our sky in just a few minutes during its orbit around Earth every 92 minutes. On the other hand, due to Earth's rotation, we witness daily cycles as the Moon rises and sets over a period slightly longer than 27 days. This mesmerizing snapshot offers us an opportunity to marvel at both technological achievements and natural wonders simultaneously. It serves as a reminder of humanity's progress in space exploration while highlighting how small we are within our vast solar system. Captured by NASA/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY and featuring elements such as maria (dark regions), craters, and different lunar phases like gibbous moonlight; this image invites us to contemplate our place in space through astrophysics and astronomical perspectives.
