Kapitsa and Androv, Russian physicists
Kapitsa and Androv, Russian physicists. Pyotr Leonidovich Kapitsa (left, 1894-1984) is listening to a graduate student called Androv (right), who is defending his doctoral thesis. Kapitsa was born and educated in Russia, but his early work was with Rutherford in Cambridge University, England. He worked in England until 1934 when, on a visit back to the USSR, he was detained and his passport taken away. He was forced instead to work in the USSR with state funding. His share of the 1978 Nobel Prize for Physics was given for his work on low-temperature physics. The Kapitza resistance is named for him. Photographed in 1963, in Moscow, Russia

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we witness a significant moment in the history of science. Pyotr Leonidovich Kapitsa, a renowned Russian physicist, is seen attentively listening to a young graduate student named Androv as he defends his doctoral thesis. The year is 1963, and the setting is Moscow, Russia. Kapitsa's journey in physics began in England under the guidance of Rutherford at Cambridge University. However, due to unforeseen circumstances during a visit back to his homeland in 1934, Kapitsa was detained and forced to work in the USSR with state funding. Despite these challenges, his dedication and contributions led him to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1978 for his groundbreaking research on low-temperature physics. The photograph captures an intimate moment between two generations of physicists - an elderly Kapitsa sharing his wisdom with a young Androv who stands before a blackboard covered with equations and graphs. It symbolizes the passing of knowledge from one generation to another. This image not only showcases their academic pursuits but also reflects upon their resilience amidst political turmoil. Both men played crucial roles in advancing scientific understanding while navigating through complex historical circumstances. As we gaze upon this snapshot frozen in time, we are reminded of Kapitsa's enduring legacy as one of Russia's most esteemed scientists and Androv's determination as he embarks on his own scientific journey under the watchful eye of his mentor.
