Kidney anatomy, artwork

Kidney anatomy. Cutaway artwork showing the internal structure of a kidney. The kidney, one of a pair of such organs, is part of the human excretory system. It filters waste such as urea from the blood and passes it to the bladder as urine. Blood arrives in the renal artery (red), is filtered through filtering units (nephrons) in the outer area (cortex) of the kidney (shown at top), and then leaves through the renal vein (blue). The waste products drain towards the centre through the renal medulla (seven dark red areas) and into the renal pelvis and into the ureter (cream, lower left). The kidneys also help regulate electrolyte balance

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork showcases the intricate internal structure of a kidney, one of the vital organs in the human excretory system. The cutaway illustration provides a detailed glimpse into the anatomy and physiology of this remarkable organ. As part of its crucial role, the kidney filters waste substances like urea from our blood, ensuring that our bodies maintain a healthy balance. The renal artery, depicted in vibrant red hues, delivers blood to be filtered through numerous nephrons located in the outer cortex region of the kidney. These filtering units act as microscopic purifiers, removing impurities and toxins from our bloodstream. Once purified, the cleansed blood exits through the renal vein shown in calming blue tones. Intriguingly, waste products are directed towards the center of this complex organ via seven distinct dark red areas known as renal medulla before being collected in the renal pelvis. From there, they continue their journey through an elegant network leading to expulsion from our bodies via urine production. Beyond its filtration function, these kidneys also play a pivotal role in maintaining electrolyte balance within us. This stunning artwork not only highlights their anatomical beauty but also serves as a reminder of how intricately designed and interconnected our biological systems truly are.
