EDITORS COMMENTS
This 19th-century artwork showcases the magnificent Mullaperiyar Dam, formerly known as the Periyar Dam, located in Kerala, southern India. Constructed between 1887 and 1895, this gravity dam stands tall at a height of 54 meters with a width spanning an impressive 365 meters. The dam's foundation measures a robust 42 meters thick at its base before tapering down to just 4 meters at its crest. In this monochrome print, we witness the dedication and perseverance of workers who risked their lives during construction. Ascending scaffolding on the right side of the image, these brave individuals played an integral role in bringing this engineering marvel to life. However, it is disheartening to learn that tragically, 483 workers succumbed to diseases like malaria while working on this ambitious project. The historical significance of this artwork lies not only in capturing a moment from Indian history but also in showcasing advancements in civil engineering during that era. This illustration was featured in La Science Illustree—a renowned French popular science weekly—specifically within its second period volume published in 1897. As we admire this piece of artistry today, let us remember those who dedicated their lives to constructing such monumental structures and appreciate how far technology has advanced since then. The Mullaperiyar Dam stands as a testament to human ingenuity and serves as an enduring symbol of progress for generations past and present.
