Newtons second telescope

Newtons telescope. Replica of the second reflecting telescope designed and built by English astronomer Sir Isaac Newton (1642-1727) in 1671. Newton invented the reflecting telescope in 1668 because he thought that it was impossible to produce a telescope lens that did not cause colour distortions (chromatic aberration). This telescope focuses light using a parabolic mirror, which is reflected back up the 30-centimetre long tube to another mirror. This second mirror reflects the image sideways through an eyepiece (upper right). This telescope was first demonstrated by Newton in 1672 at the Royal Society, London, England

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a replica of Newton's second reflecting telescope, an iconic invention by the brilliant English astronomer Sir Isaac Newton. Crafted in 1671, this remarkable piece was born out of Newton's pursuit to overcome chromatic aberration caused by traditional lenses. His ingenious solution involved using a parabolic mirror to focus light, which is then reflected back up the 30-centimeter long tube towards another mirror. This secondary mirror redirects the image sideways through an eyepiece located in the upper right corner. The historical significance of this instrument cannot be overstated. In 1672, Newton himself demonstrated its capabilities at the prestigious Royal Society in London, England. This groundbreaking creation revolutionized astronomy and paved the way for future advancements in telescopic technology. As we gaze upon this stunning replica, we are transported back to a time when scientific exploration was at its zenith. The intricate craftsmanship and attention to detail remind us of how far humanity has come in unraveling the mysteries of our universe. This print serves as a testament to both Newton's genius and his enduring legacy within astronomical history. It stands as a reminder that even centuries later, his contributions continue to inspire scientists and enthusiasts alike on their quest for knowledge about our vast cosmos.
