The third component, Proxima Centauri, is the closest star to Earth at a distance of 4.3 light years. Beta Centauri, or Hadar, is also a binary star; it is much more remote at a distance of 424 light years. The photograph was taken from Pauhatanui, New Zealand. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of the star Sirius, captured using a star filter. Positioned just below the center are two brilliant stars known as Alpha Centauri and Beta Centauri. To their right, we can witness the formation of the Southern Cross constellation, also called Crux Australis. Alpha Centauri, nicknamed Rigil Kent, is an intriguing triple star system where its two brightest components create a visually stunning yellow-orange binary. Proxima Centauri, which forms the third component of this system, holds special significance as it happens to be Earth's closest neighboring star at a distance of 4.3 light years. On the other hand, Beta Centauri or Hadar presents itself as a binary star that lies much farther away from us at approximately 424 light years. The photograph was skillfully taken from Pauhatanui in New Zealand with North positioned at the top. The camera settings used for this shot were 50mm focal length lens with an aperture value of f/2 and an exposure time of 20 seconds. Fujichrome 1600 +2 film was employed to capture this ethereal image. This awe-inspiring print not only serves as a testament to our fascination with astronomy but also highlights our relentless pursuit to explore and understand celestial wonders like never before.
