Othniel Marsh, American palaeontologist

Othniel Charles Marsh (1831-1899), American palaeontologist. Marsh attended Yale University and was made the first professor of palaeontology in the USA in 1866. During his career he led several expeditions to the American West to collect fossils, and published many papers, in which he described over 500 new fossilised species. In 1871 he discovered the first pterodactyl remains in the USA. From 1883-1895 he was President of the National Academy of Sciences. Marsh donated his entire fossil collection to Yale in 1898
