Rows of PCR systems copying human DNA

Human genome research. Rows of GeneAmp polymerase chain reaction (PCR) systems copying human DNA at the Joint Genome Institute (JGI). The JGI is part of the international Human Genome Project (HUGO) that aims to map the whole human genome, the three billion base pairs that form the genetic code of human DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid), by 2003. PCR produces exact copies of DNA fragments, as polyme- rase enzymes make single DNA strands synthesize mirror copies of themselves. Repeating the process produces vast numbers of cloned fragments for analysis. The JGI, in Walnut Creek, California, is a collaboration between three of the US Department of Energys National Laboratories

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases rows of GeneAmp polymerase chain reaction (PCR) systems diligently copying human DNA at the Joint Genome Institute (JGI). As part of the international Human Genome Project (HUGO), the JGI aims to unravel the mysteries hidden within the three billion base pairs that form our genetic code, known as human DNA. PCR, a groundbreaking technique, allows for the production of exact copies of DNA fragments. Through this process, polymerase enzymes synthesize mirror copies of single DNA strands, enabling scientists to generate vast numbers of cloned fragments for analysis. The significance of PCR lies in its ability to accelerate and streamline genetic research. Located in Walnut Creek, California, the JGI represents a remarkable collaboration between three prestigious US Department of Energy's National Laboratories. This partnership underscores their commitment to advancing our understanding of genetics and pushing boundaries in biochemistry and biotechnology. The image captures not only cutting-edge technology but also symbolizes humanity's relentless pursuit to decode its own blueprint. It serves as a testament to countless hours spent by dedicated researchers who strive towards uncovering invaluable insights into human health and evolution. As we gaze upon this photograph print from Science Photo Library, we are reminded that every row represents another step closer towards unlocking nature's most profound secrets encoded within our very being – our DNA.
