These parasitic trematodes (flatworms) are a cause of schistosomiasis in humans. They live in the veins around the large intestine, anchoring themselves to the wall of the blood vessel with several suckers (one seen at centre), and feeding on their hosts blood. The worms cause fever and abdominal pain, and the eggs produced by the female worm can form obstructions of tissues known as granulomas
