Sumatran orangutan

Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abelii). The orangutan is an arboreal (tree-dwelling) great ape endemic to Sumatra. It is a solitary animal, meeting others only to mate, although females and their young may stay together for several years. An adult male does not seem to have a defined territory, and never fights other males. The orangutans diet consists mainly of fruit and insects. Photographed in Gunung Leuser National Park, Sumatra, Indonesia

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the magnificent Sumatran orangutan, a remarkable arboreal great ape found exclusively in the lush forests of Sumatra, Indonesia. With its striking reddish fur and soulful eyes, this solitary creature is truly a sight to behold. While adult males do not claim specific territories or engage in conflicts with other males, they lead an independent existence, only coming together with others for mating purposes. The diet of these incredible primates primarily consists of delectable fruits and insects that they skillfully gather from their treetop abodes. This particular snapshot was taken within the breathtaking Gunung Leuser National Park, where these orangutans find sanctuary amidst the rich biodiversity of Southeast Asia. However, it is crucial to acknowledge that despite their awe-inspiring presence in nature's tapestry, Sumatran orangutans face grave threats to their survival. Classified as critically endangered due to habitat loss and poaching activities, every glimpse we get into their lives becomes all the more precious. As we admire this photograph captured by Science Photo Library without any commercial intent or mention thereof, let us be reminded of our responsibility towards protecting these majestic creatures and preserving their natural habitats for generations to come. The old man of the forest deserves our utmost respect and conservation efforts as one of Earth's most extraordinary inhabitants.
