Tiktaalik prehistoric fish, artwork

Tiktaalik roseae, computer artwork. This extinct lobe-finned fish lived during the Late Devonian period (375 million years ago). A Tiktaalik roseae fossil was found in the Canadian Arctic in 2004. When scientists later analysed its skull, it was found to demonstrate a key transitional stage between fish and tetrapods (four-limbed vertebrates). It had fish-like fins with thin ray bones and scales, but also a flattened skull (similar to a crocodile), a mobile neck, sturdy shoulders, lungs, and ribs - features characteristic of tetrapods. Tiktaalik roseae is thought to have lived in shallow water, using its fins to prop itself up

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable Tiktaalik roseae, a prehistoric fish that lived 375 million years ago during the Late Devonian period. Discovered in the Canadian Arctic in 2004, this extraordinary lobe-finned fish provides crucial insights into the evolutionary transition from aquatic creatures to four-limbed vertebrates known as tetrapods. The computer artwork beautifully depicts Tiktaalik roseae's unique features, which serve as a missing link between fish and land-dwelling animals. With its fish-like fins adorned with thin ray bones and scales, it also possessed a flattened skull akin to that of a crocodile. The presence of a mobile neck, sturdy shoulders, lungs, and ribs further distinguishes it as an early tetrapod ancestor. Thought to have inhabited shallow waters, Tiktaalik roseae utilized its fins for support while navigating its environment. This illustration not only captures the essence of this ancient creature but also highlights its significance in understanding the origins of life on Earth. As we delve into paleontology and explore our planet's rich history through fossils like Tiktaalik roseae, we gain invaluable knowledge about our own evolutionary journey. This mesmerizing artwork serves as a testament to scientific discovery and reminds us of how interconnected all forms of life truly are.
