EDITORS COMMENTS
This 19th-century artwork captures the historic Whitgifts almshouses in Croydon, England. Erected in the late 16th century under the guidance of John Whitgift, Archbishop of Canterbury, these almshouses were designed to provide housing for elderly individuals. Also known as Whitgifts hospital or the Hospital of the Holy Trinity, they offered sheltered accommodation and even included living quarters for Whitgift himself. The detailed illustration showcases the architectural beauty of these almshouses, with their medieval charm and intricate design. The courtyard is adorned with benches where residents could gather and socialize within a peaceful environment. The inset at the lower right corner features a depiction of Archbishop John Whitgift himself, highlighting his significant role in establishing this philanthropic institution. Remarkably, these almshouses continue to serve their original purpose today and are maintained by the esteemed Whitgift Foundation. This charitable organization ensures that elderly individuals receive care and support within this historical setting. As we gaze upon this monochrome print from Greater London's Edward Walford publication (1883-4), we are reminded of both the rich history embedded within these walls and its enduring legacy as a place that provides comfort and solace to those in need. It stands as a testament to compassion, community spirit, and timeless architecture that has stood strong throughout centuries.
