EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the worldview of Thales of Miletus, an ancient Greek philosopher who made significant contributions to mathematics and astronomy. Known for his scientific perspectives, Thales is renowned for accurately predicting a solar eclipse in 585 BC and attempting to explain the occurrence of earthquakes. In this artwork, we witness Thales' belief that the Earth was a disc floating within a vast ocean, enclosed by a sphere encompassing all the stars. The black background accentuates the celestial elements depicted - the sun, moon, and world - against which his cosmological theories unfold. The illustration focuses on the Mediterranean region, representing the known world according to maps from that era. It transports us back in time to explore how ancient civilizations perceived their surroundings and understood their place within it. Carlos Clarivan's artistic rendition beautifully captures both classical and historical aspects with its attention to detail. The spherical shape symbolizes unity while emphasizing Thales' profound understanding of astronomical concepts during antiquity. This thought-provoking piece invites contemplation about our own perception of space and our ever-evolving understanding of our universe's origins. It serves as a testament to humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge throughout history while honoring one of its earliest pioneers in scientific exploration: Thales of Miletus.
