This evocative photograph, taken at Highbridge station in Somerset in 1928, captures a moment in time as the last milk churns from a departed train are emptied and prepared for collection. The station, which opened in June 1841 and is now known as Highbridge and Burnham, was a bustling hub of activity during the Great Western Railway (GWR) era. In this scene, we see the milk churns, their once-full contents now emptied, neatly lined up on the platform. The churns, which were a common sight at railway stations during this period, were transported from dairy farms to towns and cities, providing fresh milk to communities. The empty churns would be collected by local dairies or farmers, ready to be refilled and transported back to the station for the next train. The station staff, dressed in their uniforms, are seen in the background, going about their daily tasks. The GWR goods train, which brought the milk churns to the station, has departed, leaving behind only the remnants of its cargo.
