Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Chipmunk WK518 ready for inspection at RAF Coningsby
Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Chipmunk WK518 ready for inspection at RAF Coningsby.
The two de Havilland Canada Chipmunks held on charge by the RAF Memorial Flight are the last in RAF service and are probably the least-seen aircraft of the Memorial Flight fleet. They are used year-round, primarily for the conversion and continuation training of the Flights pilots on tail-wheel aircraft. Other functions of the Chippies include the reconnaissance of new venues, the delivery or collection of pilots and, occasionally, the delivery of small spare parts.
The Royal Air Force Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (RAF-BBMF) is administratively part of the Royal Air Force No 1 Group and operates from RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire. They have Spitfires, Hurricanes, a Lancaster and Dakota as well as Chipmunks in the flight.
The aircraft are regularly seen at events commemorating World War II, upon British State occasions, notably the Trooping the Colour celebrating Queen Elizabeth IIs birthday and at air displays throughout the United Kingdom and Europe
