EDITORS COMMENTS
In this iconic photograph, Manchester City's German-born goalkeeper Bert Trautmann makes an unforgettable save during the FA Cup Final at Wembley Stadium in 1956. Trautmann, who was born in Germany but had defected to England during World War II, was known for his bravery and commitment between the posts. During this particular match against Birmingham City, Trautmann displayed his heroics once again as he made a last-ditch save under the feet of Birmingham City's inside left, Peter Murphy. But this save came at a cost. As Murphy's shot hit Trautmann, the goalkeeper sustained a broken neck. Despite the injury, Trautmann refused to leave the field, carrying on even though he was half-conscious. The courage and determination of Trautmann, who was only 32 years old at the time, paid off. Manchester City went on to win the FA Cup match 3-1, securing their first major trophy since 1934. Trautmann's injury was only discovered after the match when he was taken to the hospital. His heroics that day went down in history, earning him the nickname "The Trautmann Tank" and cementing his place as a Manchester City legend. This photograph, taken by PA Archives, is a testament to Trautmann's bravery and the indomitable spirit of Manchester City during a time when the team was struggling to regain its former glory. The image captures a pivotal moment in the team's history and serves as a reminder of the power of determination and resilience.
