EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph captures the powerful presence of Surajah Dowlah, the Nawab of Bengal. Adorned in traditional attire and a majestic turban, he exudes an air of authority and regality. The intricate details of his moustache and hat add to his distinguished appearance. However, behind this noble facade lies a dark history. Surajah Dowlah is infamous for perpetrating the horrific atrocity known as the Black Hole of Calcutta on June 18th, 1756. This event marked a tragic chapter in Indian history when British prisoners were confined in a small dungeon overnight, resulting in many deaths due to suffocation and heat exhaustion. Mirza Mohammad Sirajud Dawla, also known as Siraj ud-Daulah, was the last independent Nawab of Bengal, Bihar, and Orissa. His rule came to an end with the advent of British colonization in India. The engraving beautifully captures both Surajah Dowlah's imposing stature and the historical significance surrounding him. It serves as a reminder that even those who hold positions of power can be tainted by acts that forever stain their legacy. Displayed within this private collection print from Bridgeman Images, it invites viewers to reflect upon not only the individual depicted but also on broader themes such as colonialism and its impact on indigenous cultures across Asia.
