This print shows the Heavy Brigade advancing to engage the Russian cavalry at the Battle of Balaklava on 25 October 1854 while the 93rd Highlanders form a line. A vignette of Major-General James Yorke Scarlett is visible below to the right.
During the battle a large body of some 3, 000 Russian cavalry threatened the road to the harbour of Balaklava. The British Heavy Brigade, about 800 strong, consisted of ten squadrons of heavy cavalry, commanded by Scarlett. Seeing the Russian horsemen halted, and thus vulnerable to attack, Scarlett immediately charged uphill with three of his squadrons, being successively reinforced by the remaining seven squadrons of his Brigade. Reeling from this series of attacks, the Russian cavalry retired in disorder a few minutes later.); © National Army Museum

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Victorious Charge, 1854 circa (chromolitho) captures the heroic moment of the Battle of Balaklava during the Crimean War. In this stunning print, we witness the Heavy Brigade fearlessly advancing towards the Russian cavalry while the 93rd Highlanders form a steadfast line behind them. Created by T Gowing and published by T Forman and Sons in Nottingham around 1854, this chromolithograph beautifully portrays Major-General James Yorke Scarlett in a vignette below to the right. The scene depicted here is one of immense bravery and strategic brilliance. As some 3,000 Russian cavalry threatened Balaklava's crucial harbor road, Scarlett seized an opportunity when he saw their forces halt momentarily. With swift decision-making and unwavering courage, he led his three squadrons charging uphill towards their vulnerable adversaries. As reinforcements arrived from his remaining seven squadrons of heavy cavalry, Scarlett's relentless attacks left the Russian cavalry reeling in disorder within minutes. This pivotal victory showcased not only British military prowess but also highlighted individual acts of heroism that defined this historic battle. This remarkable print serves as a testament to those who fought valiantly at Balaklava and honors their triumph over adversity. Preserved at London's National Army Museum, it stands as a reminder of our shared history and pays homage to those who sacrificed for freedom.
