EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured aquatint print, titled "A View of Matavai Bay, Tahiti, 1787" takes us back to the late eighteenth century and offers a glimpse into the world of Captain James Cook's third voyage. Painted by James Cleveley, a carpenter on HMS Resolution, this artwork showcases the stunning beauty of Matavai Bay in Tahiti. The scene depicts two ships anchored in the bay: HMS Resolution and HMS Discovery. The palm trees sway gently in the breeze as native people go about their daily activities along the shore. The vibrant colors bring life to this historical moment, capturing both the natural splendor of Tahiti and its indigenous inhabitants. Interestingly, despite being titled "View of Charlotte Sound, New Zealand" this artwork is actually a view of Matavai Bay in Tahiti. John Martyn repainted his brother James' original sketches into aquatints after James passed away in 1786. These prints were part of a set called "Views of the South Seas". As we admire this piece from Bridgeman Images' collection, we are transported back to an era marked by exploration and colonialism. It serves as a reminder not only of Tahiti's breathtaking scenery but also its complex history with European powers like Britain. This handcoloured aquatint print allows us to appreciate both the artistic talent involved in its creation and its significance as a historical document capturing an important chapter in maritime exploration.
