EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Archduchess Isabel Clara Eugenia, a prominent figure in European history. Born in 1566, she was the Infanta of Spain and later became the wife of Archduke Albert of Austria. The image depicts her wearing an elegant long striped dress adorned with a large ruff collar. The handcolored illustration by E. Lechevallier-Chevignard, lithographed by A. Didier, L. Flameng, and F. Laguillermie, is part of Georges Duplessis' renowned work "Costumes historiques des XVIe, XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles" (Historical costumes of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries), published in Paris in 1867. This book continued the series on costumes from earlier centuries initiated by Camille Bonnard and Paul Mercuri. Georges Duplessis himself was a distinguished curator at the Bibliotheque nationale and Edmond Lechevallier-Chevignard was not only an artist but also an interior designer for various public buildings and churches. This print captures both historical significance and artistic excellence as it immortalizes Archduchess Isabel Clara Eugenia's regal presence during her lifetime. It serves as a testament to her influence as well as showcasing the intricate fashion trends prevalent during that era. Bridgeman Images has preserved this remarkable piece through their Fine Art Finder collection, allowing viewers to appreciate its beauty while delving into the rich tapestry of European history that it represents.
