Sea Adventure: Boatswain M'Dermott and the shark (colour litho)
8668776 Sea Adventure: Boatswain M'Dermott and the shark (colour litho) by English School, (20th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: Boatswain M'Dermott and the shark. In 1892 Boatswain T M'Dermott, in charge of the cutter of HMS Swallow seeking slavers off Zanzibar, let his men bathe from the boat. Two of them were swimming alongside when a large shark appeared and made straight for them. They had no time to scramble into the boat, and one would certainly have been lost had not M'Dermott, fully clothed, leaped from the gunwale right on to the back of the surprised shark, which immediately made off as fast as it could.
