Removing a Tablet from a Confucian Temple (litho)
8661056 Removing a Tablet from a Confucian Temple (litho) by Wright, Henry Charles Seppings (1850-1937); Private Collection; (add.info.: Removing a Tablet from a Confucian Temple. The glory of Confucius in the Temple is shared by his disciples in life and a number of scholars of later days who have distinguished themselves by their efforts in upholding and spreading the Confucian teachings, to each one of whom a tablet is put up as a memorial. It has happened, indeed, many times in the course of ages that, perhaps at the whim of an Emperor, the tablet of some favourite has been wrongly honoured with a place among the elect. In such cases posterity has always been equal to the occasion, the canonization has been cancelled, and the tablet incontinently removed, as here shown. EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph captures the solemn moment of Removing a Tablet from a Confucian Temple, shedding light on the intricate traditions and beliefs surrounding Confucianism. The image depicts scholars carefully taking down a memorial tablet from its revered place in the temple, symbolizing the delicate balance between honoring past luminaries and correcting historical inaccuracies.
In Confucian temples, tablets are erected to commemorate esteemed disciples and scholars who have dedicated their lives to upholding and spreading the teachings of Confucius. However, as shown in this scene, there have been instances where certain individuals were wrongly honored with such recognition due to political influence or personal favoritism.
The artwork beautifully illustrates the reverence and respect accorded to these sacred symbols of wisdom while also highlighting the importance of historical accuracy and integrity. Through meticulous attention to detail and expert craftsmanship, Henry Charles Seppings Wright brings this poignant moment to life with striking realism.
As we gaze upon this print, we are transported back in time to witness a timeless ritual that speaks volumes about honor, tradition, and justice. It serves as a powerful reminder of how our actions today can shape the legacy we leave behind for future generations.
