EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a comical scene from the Universal Exhibition in Paris, dating back to 1855. Created by Honore Daumier, a renowned French artist, this cartoon was published in Le Charivari on June 26th of that year. The artwork humorously depicts the challenges faced by women wearing crinolines while attempting to navigate through a turnstile. During the World Exhibition held in Paris from May to November 1855, thousands of visitors flocked to the city from both within France and abroad. This event showcased advancements in various fields and attracted attention worldwide. However, as this amusing illustration suggests, even amidst such grandeur and innovation, everyday struggles persisted. The exaggerated portrayal of a woman struggling with her voluminous crinoline dress at the turnstile highlights not only fashion trends of the time but also social commentary on gender roles and expectations. Daumier's wit shines through as he playfully points out one of many inconveniences faced by women due to their fashionable attire. This particular lithograph is part of an extensive series called "Exposition Universelle" which aimed to capture different aspects of life during this significant exhibition period. Preserved in private collection today, it serves as a valuable historical artifact providing insights into both fashion history and societal norms during the Second Empire era.
