This pen and ink drawing is unlike other drawings in the album and the handwriting is unlike the rapid hand that he used on sketches from life. Possibly it was drawn for teaching purposes to demonstrate the rigging of the ship. The skilful use of washes on the sails is typical. Later in his life Schetky developed a technique of drawing with a quill pen and using the feather to apply washes.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning pen and ink drawing captures the grace and power of a 50-gun frigate in the mid-19th century. The ship is depicted with her staysails hoisted, gliding through calm waters under a fine sky. Awnings are spread across the deck, adding to the sense of leisurely elegance.
Created by John Christian Schetky, known for his meticulous attention to detail and skillful use of washes, this drawing may have been intended for teaching purposes to demonstrate the rigging of such a vessel. The artist's technique of using a quill pen and feather to apply washes is evident in the delicate shading on the sails.
As we gaze upon this historical artwork, we are transported back in time to an era when frigates ruled the seas as part of naval fleets. The intricate lines and shading bring life to this maritime scene, showcasing both the artistry of Schetky and the beauty of these majestic ships.
Displayed at the National Maritime Museum in London, this piece serves as a reminder of Britain's rich nautical history and its influence on transportation and warfare during that period. It stands as a testament to human ingenuity and craftsmanship in creating vessels that could navigate vast oceans with precision and power.
