An English yacht at anchor furling sail, 1684 (graphite, grey wash)

7342302 An English yacht at anchor furling sail, 1684 (graphite, grey wash) by Velde, Willem van de, the Elder (1611-93); 34.5x73.5 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: Willem van de Velde, the Elder
This work is a free drawing, showing a small yacht at anchor in the foreground, viewed from a point ahead of the starboard beam. Men are depicted vigorously brailing up the mainsail. On the right - and partially obscured by the yacht - is a view of a galliot, depicted from the port broadside, with all its sails set. In the foreground on the left is another vessel which is a fishing wherry. This ship is rigged with a small spritsail in the bow. There is a small ship depicted in the middle-distance of the composition and there is a coastline in the background.
The drawing may have been made during the visit to Chatham for the launch of the Royal Sovereign but it is drawn much more rapidly than its related picture, PAI7282. It has been tentatively dated to 1684 based on the drawing's watermark.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning graphite and grey wash print captures the essence of maritime life in 1684, as depicted by Willem van de Velde, the Elder. The scene shows an English yacht at anchor, with men energetically furling up the mainsail. In the background, a galliot is visible with all its sails set, showcasing the bustling activity of ships at sea. The attention to detail in this drawing is remarkable - from the rigging of each vessel to the coastline in the distance. The composition also includes a fishing wherry rigged with a small spritsail and another ship in the middle-distance. It's as if we are transported back in time to witness these vessels navigating through calm waters. It is believed that this drawing may have been created during a visit to Chatham for the launch of the 'Royal Sovereign', adding historical significance to this artwork. The rapid yet precise strokes used by van de Velde bring life and movement to each element within the composition. Overall, this print serves as a window into 17th-century maritime culture, showcasing both technical skill and artistic vision. A true masterpiece that continues to captivate viewers centuries later.
