Alfred the Great, 1712 - A Glimpse into the Illustrious Reign of a Visionary King
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print showcases Alfred the Great, an iconic figure in British history. Created by an unknown artist in 1712, this portrait depicts Alfred wearing a regal crown and luxurious ermine robes while holding a sceptre, symbolizing his sovereign power. King Alfred's reign spanned from 871 to 899 AD, during which he served as both the King of Wessex and the Anglo-Saxons. The accompanying text mistakenly attributes Alfred with founding University College Oxford; however, it was actually established by William of Durham centuries later. Nevertheless, this image offers us a glimpse into the immense influence that Alfred had on education and learning during his time. With its intricate engravings and monochromatic tones, this print transports us back to the vibrant cultural landscape of 18th-century England. It is housed in the renowned Bodleian Gallery at Oxford University – a fitting location for such an important historical artifact. As we admire this portrait today, let us remember King Alfred's significant contributions to his country. His unwavering leadership and dedication to knowledge continue to inspire generations even after more than a millennium has passed since his rule.
