Annual Dinner of the Governors of Bridewell and Bethlem Hospitals, in the Hall, Bridewell, [London], 1850. The entertainment takes place in the Great Hall of Bridewell Hospital, a magnificent wainscoted apartment...The President [Sir Peter Laurie]...gave a short summary of the proceedings in each Hospital during the past year, from which it appears that 316 patients had been admitted into Bethlem Hospital, and maintained there free of all charge; and that during the same period 175 patients had been discharged cured. He also stated that 80 poor destitute young offenders had been admitted into the House of Occupations, which is a part of Bridewell Hospital, having for its object the reformation of juvenile offenders; and that 64 had been outfitted and provided with situations - most of whom, on the day of the festival, were known to be doing well'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the Annual Dinner of the Governors of Bridewell and Bethlem Hospitals, held in the grand Hall of Bridewell Hospital in London, in the year 1850. The President of the meeting, Sir Peter Laurie, is seen presiding over the event with a sense of authority and dignity. The atmosphere is one of camaraderie and accomplishment, as the governors gather to celebrate another successful year of providing care and support to those in need. The Great Hall of Bridewell Hospital is a magnificent wainscoted apartment, filled with ornate decorations and large windows that let in ample light. The long table is laden with an extravagant feast, and the governors are dressed in their finest attire, adding to the grandeur of the occasion. Sir Peter gave a summary of the proceedings in each Hospital during the past year. In Bethlem Hospital, 316 patients had been admitted and maintained free of charge, while 175 had been discharged cured. The House of Occupations, a part of Bridewell Hospital, had admitted 80 poor, destitute young offenders, with the objective of their reformation. Sixty-four of these young offenders had been outfitted and provided with situations, and on the day of the festival, many were known to be doing well. The Annual Dinner of the Governors of Bridewell and Bethlem Hospitals was not just a celebration of the year's accomplishments but also a testament to the commitment and compassion of those involved in the institutions' management.
