Arch in Whitefriars at the Wilberforce Column, Hull, 1854. Creator: Unknown

Arch in Whitefriars at the Wilberforce Column, Hull, 1854. Queen Victoria visits Yorkshire....dense crowds...assembled in front of the hotel...and thronged the principal thoroughfares of the town, which soon became almost impassable...The inhabitants testified their loyal devotion by an illumination so general, that, along whole lines of streets, scarcely a house could be seen which had not a device of some kind or other. The chief display was in the Market-place and in Whitefriargate, where triumphal arches blazed with light, and the Wilberforce monument and the gilded statue of King William III. were thrown into bold relief...So great was the demand for gas for purposes of illumination, that handbills were issued by the gas companies, requesting the inhabitants to husband the supply, and burn as little as possible within their houses...'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the historic moment when Queen Victoria and Prince Albert visited Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, England, in 1854. The image, taken at the Whitefriars area near the Wilberforce Column, showcases the dense crowds that had gathered to welcome the monarch. The inhabitants of Hull expressed their loyal devotion through an extensive illumination, with barely a house in the principal thoroughfares remaining unadorned. The Market-place and Whitefriargate were particularly adorned with triumphal arches, the Wilberforce monument, and the gilded statue of King William III, all bathed in light. The demand for gas for illumination purposes was so high that gas companies issued handbills, requesting the inhabitants to conserve the supply and burn as little gas as possible within their homes. The scene is a testament to the patriotic fervor of the British people during the Victorian era. The photograph, though devoid of color, vividly portrays the excitement and grandeur of the occasion through the various elements it captures - the horse-drawn carriages, the cheering crowds, the elegant attire of the people, and the architectural features of the column and archway. The image is a significant historical document, offering a glimpse into the past and the deep-rooted traditions of the British monarchy.
