Arms of the Free State of Cuba, 1850. Creator: Unknown

Arms of the Free State of Cuba, 1850. Some of the principal features of this device are borrowed from the arms of the United States. The form of the shield, the liberty cap which surmounts it, and the American flag in the left foreground, are each and all evidences of the respect which Cubans have for the nation whose form of government they desire to imitate...The palm tree is the emblem adopted for the island itself...The upper half of the shield represents the southerly point of Florida, sustained by the United States flag; and the northerly point of Cuba sustained by the flag of Free Cuba; the narrow passage between being considered and represented as the key to the Gulf of Mexico...The filling in of the different insignia of war and nationality is after the plan adopted in the United States'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
This 19th century print depicts the Arms of the Free State of Cuba, as published in the Illustrated London News in 1850. The creator of this engraving remains unknown, but the design showcases the strong connection between Cuba and the United States, with several elements borrowed from the American flag and coat of arms. The shield's form, the liberty cap at its summit, and the American flag in the foreground are all testaments to the Cuban people's admiration for the United States and its democratic ideals. The palm tree, adopted as the emblem for the island, is a symbol of Cuba's tropical nature and its desirable freedom. The upper half of the shield represents the southern tip of Florida, supported by the United States flag, and the northerly tip of Cuba, sustained by the flag of Free Cuba. The narrow passage between them is considered the key to the Gulf of Mexico. The intricate design of the shield is reminiscent of the heraldic traditions of the United States. The liberty cap, a Phrygian cap, is a symbol of freedom and liberty, and is worn by various figures throughout history, including the Statue of Liberty. The palm trees and palm leaves add a natural touch to the design, while the swords and bayonets represent the readiness for war and the defense of the desired freedom. This print offers a glimpse into the political climate of the 19th century, as Cuba sought to establish its independence and looked to the United States as a model for its government. The intricate details and historical significance make this an essential addition to any collection focusing on the history of the Americas, Cuba, or heraldry.
