The Bombardment of Sveaborg - Officers on the Island of Tona Miola - sketched by J. W. Carmichael, 1 Creator: Unknown

The Bombardment of Sveaborg - Officers on the Island of Tona Miola - sketched by J. W. Carmichael, 1856. Scene from the Aland War, part of the Crimean War. On Sunday afternoon, August 12, H.M. steam-vessel Lightning, Lieutenant James Campbell, proceeded to the island of Tona Miola, with Admirals Dundas and Seymour, and several other officers, for the purpose of seeing, if possible, the damage done to the rear of the town of Sveaborg [near Helsinki]. The Admirals and officers landed on the island, and were almost immediately seen from the Russian batteries, who commenced firing on them, and also on the Lightning. Their fire was most accurate, at a range of near 4000 yards; but it did not prevent the Admirals from accomplishing their purpose, for they saw the work of destruction effected by our gun and mortar boats". From "Illustrated London News", 1856

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts a pivotal moment during the Bombardment of Sveaborg in the Aland War, part of the larger Crimean War, in August 1856. The scene is sketched by J.W. Carmichael and captures Admirals Dundas and Seymour, along with several other officers, as they make their way to the island of Tona Miola to assess the damage inflicted on Sveaborg, a fortified town near Helsinki. The British naval forces had been engaged in a relentless bombardment of the Russian stronghold since August 11, using gun and mortar boats to weaken its defenses. The officers' visit to the island was a crucial intelligence-gathering mission, aimed at evaluating the extent of the damage and planning their next moves. However, their reconnaissance mission was not without peril. As they disembarked from the H.M. steam-vessel Lightning, commanded by Lieutenant James Campbell, they were immediately targeted by the Russian batteries. The Russian artillery fire was precise and accurate, with some rounds landing dangerously close to the British officers. Despite the threat, the determined group pressed on with their mission, undeterred by the enemy's retaliation. The print, published in the Illustrated London News, offers a unique glimpse into the courage and resilience of the officers involved in this significant military operation. Their determination to accomplish their mission, even under fire, highlights the strategic importance of accurate intelligence during wartime.
