EDITORS COMMENTS
The Crucifixion of Polycrates," a masterpiece by the 17th century Italian artist Salvator Rosa, depicts a unique and dramatic interpretation of the crucifixion of the Samian ruler Saint Polycrates. This engraving, created around 1662, is a testament to Rosa's innovative approach to the traditional religious theme. Polycrates, a pious and just ruler of Samos, is shown here being crucified by Roman soldiers. The black and white etching and drypoint on laid paper conveys a sense of raw emotion and intensity, with deep contrasts between the light and dark areas. The monochrome palette heightens the dramatic effect, as the stark white of the cross and the dark figures of the soldiers and Polycrates stand out against the background. Rosa's interpretation of the crucifixion deviates from the traditional depictions of the event. Instead of the usual calm and serene expression on the face of Christ, Polycrates is shown in agony, with his eyes closed and his body contorted in pain. The soldiers, too, are portrayed as rough and brutal, adding to the overall sense of chaos and violence. The Crucifixion of Polycrates is a powerful and moving work of art that challenges the viewer's expectations of the crucifixion narrative. It is a testament to Rosa's skill as an engraver and his ability to convey complex emotions through his art. This masterpiece is a must-see for anyone interested in the history of art, particularly in the 17th century and the Italian Baroque period. It is currently housed in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and is a significant addition to the gallery's collection of heritage art.
