Fashions for August - Country or Seaside Dress, 1858. Creator: Unknown
Fashions for August - Country or Seaside Dress, 1858. Round hat of leghorn, with a very broad brim, inclining downward on the forehead, so as to shade the face from the sun. The crown is encircled by a wreath composed of blue corn-flowers, mingled with grass. The strings are of very broad ribbon of two different colours - viz. dark blue and green; and under the brim of the hat, at each side, are full bouquets of blue corn-flowers and grass. The robe is of mohair, of a small chequered pattern. It has a double skirt, the upper one edged with a trimming consisting of blue and green ribbon plaited together. The wide hanging sleeves are edged with the same trimming, but of narrower width, and they are gathered up in front of the arm by a bow of ribbon of the two colours employed in the trimming. The skirt is gathered in at the waist in long plaits, and a waistband of narrow blue ribbon is fastened in front by a bow and ends of blue and green ribbon. Over the corsage is worn a fichu, or pelerine, of muslin, with three bouillones, within which are inserted runnings of blue ribbon. The pelerine is edged with a trimming of scalloped muslin. Under sleeves of white muslin, drawn loosely at the ends with bouillones and runnings of ribbon. Mittens of black filet'. From "Illustrated London News", 1858

EDITORS COMMENTS
This image from the "Illustrated London News" of 1858 showcases a fashionable woman dressed for the summer months, either in the countryside or by the seaside. The woman dons a wide-brimmed leghorn hat, adorned with a wreath of blue cornflowers and grass, providing both shade and a touch of natural beauty. The hat's strings are fastened with ribbons of dark blue and green, and beneath the brim, full bouquets of the same flowers and grass cascade on each side. The woman's robe is made of mohair in a small chequered pattern, featuring a double skirt, the upper one edged with a trimming of blue and green ribbon plaited together. The wide hanging sleeves are also trimmed with the same ribbon, but of narrower width, and are gathered up in front of the arm with a bow of ribbon. The skirt is gathered in at the waist with long plaits, and a narrow blue ribbon waistband is fastened in front with a bow and ends of blue and green ribbon. A fichu or pelerine of muslin is worn over the bodice, adorned with three bouillones and runnings of blue ribbon. The pelerine is edged with a trimming of scalloped muslin, and the woman wears undersleeves of white muslin, drawn loosely at the ends with bouillones and runnings of ribbon. To complete the ensemble, she wears black mittens made of filet. This elegant and timeless fashion illustrates the grace and charm of summer fashion during the Victorian era.
