EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the awe-inspiring Giant limestone statues of Rameses II, located in the Temple of Rameses at Abu Simbel, Egypt. Created by Scottish artist David Roberts in 1836, this watercolor painting beautifully captures the grandeur and significance of these colossal sculptures. Rameses II, one of Ancient Egypt's most renowned pharaohs, ruled from 1279 to 1213 BC and was known for his prolific temple building. These magnificent statues depict him holding the crook and flail, symbols representing kingship and authority. Each statue proudly displays Rameses' cartouche on its right shoulder. David Roberts traveled extensively throughout Egypt and the Holy Land during his lifetime. His sketches were later lithographed by Louis Haghe, a prominent Victorian lithographer, resulting in a highly popular book that showcased these remarkable sites. The photograph provides a glimpse into the interior of this sacred temple adorned with intricate hieroglyphics and vibrant colors. It transports us back to ancient times when religion played a central role in Egyptian society. Now housed at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, this print serves as a testament to both Roberts' artistic talent and Rameses II's enduring legacy as an influential monarch.
