Henry Sachs with Robert Goddards Rocket in New Mexico, USA, 1930. Creator: NASA
Henry Sachs with Robert Goddards Rocket in New Mexico, USA, 1930. Henry Sachs, machinist, is shown with Dr. Robert H. Goddards rocket used in the first flight at Roswell, New Mexico on December 30, 1930. The rocket attained an altitude of about 2, 000 feet and speed of about 500 miles per hour. In 1930, with a grant from the Guggenheim Foundation, Goddard and his crew moved from Massachusetts to Roswell to conduct research and test flights. This rocket was one of many that he launched in Roswell from 1930 to 1932 and from 1934 to 1941. Dr. Goddard has been recognized as the father of American rocketry and as one of the pioneers in the theoretical exploration of space. His dream was the conquest of the upper atmosphere and ultimately space through the use of rocket propulsion. When the United States began to prepare for the conquest of space in the 1950s, American rocket scientists began to recognize the debt owed to the New England professor. They discovered that it was virtually impossible to construct a rocket or launch a satellite without acknowledging the work of Dr. Goddard

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the history of space exploration. In 1930, Henry Sachs, a skilled machinist, stands proudly beside Dr. Robert H. Goddard's revolutionary rocket in New Mexico, USA. This particular rocket was used in the first flight at Roswell on December 30th of that year. Under a grant from the Guggenheim Foundation, Dr. Goddard and his team relocated to Roswell from Massachusetts to conduct research and test flights. From 1930 to 1932 and again from 1934 to 1941, they launched numerous rockets like this one into the skies above Roswell. Dr. Robert H. Goddard is widely regarded as the father of American rocketry and an influential pioneer in theoretical space exploration. His visionary dream was to conquer not only the upper atmosphere but also outer space itself using rocket propulsion. As America began its preparations for venturing into space during the 1950s, it became evident that Dr. Goddard's work played an indispensable role in this endeavor. Rocket scientists discovered that acknowledging his contributions was essential when constructing rockets or launching satellites. This remarkable photograph serves as a testament to Dr. Goddard's groundbreaking achievements and reminds us of his enduring legacy within NASA's rich history of scientific innovation and exploration beyond our planet's boundaries.
