Hunters of Kamchatka, 19th century. Creators: Friedrich Heinrich Kittlitz, Victor Adam

Hunters of Kamchatka, 19th century. One of 65 lithographs that were included in the volume of maps published after the round-the-world voyage of the corvette Seniavin commissioned by Tsar Nicholas I and carried out in 1826-29 under the command of Captain Fedor Litke (the Russian version of the name of Count Friedrich Lu¨tke, a Baltic German). The expedition began in Kronstadt (the main imperial Russian naval base near Saint Petersburg where Russian circumnavigations typically began and ended); it then traveled around Cape Horn to the Pacific Ocean. This voyage was one of many Russian scientific naval surveys in the first part of the 19th century

EDITORS COMMENTS
Hunters of Kamchatka" is a captivating lithograph print created by German naturalist Friedrich Heinrich Kittlitz and French artist Victor Adam in the 19th century. This image is one of 65 lithographs that were included in the comprehensive volume of maps published after the historic round-the-world voyage of the Russian corvette Seniavin. Commissioned by Tsar Nicholas I, this expedition, led by Captain Fedor Litke, began in Kronstadt, Russia, and traveled around Cape Horn to the Pacific Ocean. This voyage was part of numerous Russian scientific naval surveys carried out in the first half of the 19th century. The expedition aimed to explore and document the vast territories of the Far East, including Kamchatka Krai, Russia. This print showcases two hunters on horseback, dressed in traditional clothing, meeting at the edge of a forest. The hunters, with their determined expressions and focused gaze, embody the spirit of discovery and exploration that characterized the Russian expedition. The print, produced using the lithotint technique, is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of both Russia and Europe. The image, with its intricate details, highlights the textures of the hunters' clothing, the horses' coats, and the surrounding forest. The meeting of the hunters at the forest's edge adds a sense of intrigue and mystery to the image, making it a fascinating glimpse into the past. This print, created by Kittlitz and Adam, is a valuable historical artifact that provides insight into the lives of the people living on the frontier of the Russian Empire during the 19th century. It is a reminder of the significant role that exploration and scientific discovery played in shaping the world we live in today.
