EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Jack Petersen, the renowned Welsh boxer, in 1938. Born in 1911 and passing away in 1990, Petersen left an indelible mark on British boxing history. In 1932, he claimed victory over Harry Crossley to become the British light-heavyweight champion. However, he chose not to defend his title and instead moved up to the heavyweight division. Petersen's decision proved fruitful as he knocked out Reggie Meen, becoming the first Welshman to hold the prestigious British heavyweight championship. Although he lost his title on points to Len Harvey in 1933, Petersen reclaimed it with a remarkable revenge victory by technical knockout against Harvey just a year later. Throughout his career, Petersen demonstrated exceptional skill and resilience by successfully defending his titles multiple times before suffering a technical knockout defeat at the hands of South Africa's Ben Foord in 1936. Despite this setback, Petersen's record boasts an impressive tally of 33 wins with only five losses. Notably, three of those losses occurred during non-title bouts against German heavyweight Walter Neusel. This Churchmans Cigarettes picture card immortalizes Jack Petersen as a true sports personality and national hero for Wales. His portrait exudes strength and determination while wearing traditional boxing attire from that era. As we delve into this snapshot from the past century, we are reminded of Jack Petersen's legacy as a formidable fighter who proudly represented Britain on both national and international stages.
