The late Mr. John Forster, 1876. Creator: Unknown

The late Mr. John Forster, 1876. British writer and journalist: He was editor of the "Examiner" during ten years, and for a short time of the "Daily News"...In 1870 Charles Dickens died. Mr. Forster had been his oldest friend; no one had known the great novelist so well; to no one had all the hopes and disappointments of his career been so fully revealed. With singular propriety, therefore, the literary remains of Dickens were confided to Mr. Forster, and to him was intrusted the care of writing his life. The biography appeared in three volumes in 1871 and 1874, and it cannot be doubted that Mr. Forster has done the best for his friend in this narrative of his life...In 1855 Forster was appointed Secretary to the Lunacy Commission...'. From "Illustrated London News", 1876
