EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the intricate details of a silver-gilt nef from The Loan Collection at South-Kensington in 1862. The nef, a large medieval sailing ship, is beautifully crafted with two tiers of guns and rigged with masts and sails. Musketters and officers can be seen on deck, along with sailors in the rigging. The foresail proudly displays a coat of arms featuring the merchant's mark of Valentine Jeger. The vessel is supported by a merman blowing a conch on an oval stand adorned with embossed shells. Standing at 2 feet 2 inches tall, this nef is truly a work of art that showcases the craftsmanship and attention to detail of its time. Originally owned by Baron L. de Rothschild, this piece now resides in the Victoria and Albert Museum as part of their extensive collection. This black-and-white engraving from the Illustrated London News provides a glimpse into both the past centuries when it was created and the 19th-century fascination with ornamental art. A true treasure from history, this silver-gilt nef continues to captivate viewers with its beauty and historical significance.
