EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative engraving captures the distinguished visage of Major-General The Hon. Sir Henry Ramsay, C.B. K.C.S.I., Commissioner of Kumaon in 1876. The image is derived from a photograph taken by the renowned photographer Johann Edvardt Sache, also known as John Sache or John Edward Sache. Sir Henry's military career spanned over forty years, with the majority of that time dedicated to the administration of Kumaon, a vast territory in present-day Uttarakhand, India. His influence in the region was so profound that he earned the moniker, "King of Kumaon." The territory extended from the Terai plains to the snowy Himalayan range. During the Prince of Wales' visit to British territory in 1876, all the arrangements were under Sir Henry's meticulous management. This print, published in the esteemed "Illustrated London News," offers a glimpse into the life of a dedicated colonial administrator and military officer whose name remains synonymous with the history of Kumaon and the British Raj.
