Napoleon at the Siege of Toulon, 1793, (19th century)

Napoleon at the Siege of Toulon, 1793, (19th century). The major port of Toulon was anti-revolutionary and on 28 August 1793, the city turned itself over to the Bourbons and a British, Spanish and pro-Bourbon military force. Paris reacted quickly and laid siege to the city on 7 September, with several attempts to recapture it failing through poor leadership by generals Jean Carteaux and Francois Doppet. Their poor performances led to a young Chef de Bataillon Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) scheming with political allies to replace them with General Jacques Dugommier. The new commander then agreed to plans put forward by Bonaparte to storm a key fort that would allow French artillery to bombard the British fleet anchored in the harbour. The attack occurred on 17 December, in which Bonaparte was wounded by a bayonet in the leg, and less than a day later the British fleet, under Admiral Lord Hood, sailed away. On the 19th, revolutionary troops reoccupied Toulon earning Bonaparte promotion to general of brigade

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print captures a pivotal moment in history - Napoleon at the Siege of Toulon in 1793. This 19th-century image depicts the young and ambitious Chef de Bataillon Napoleon Bonaparte, who would later become one of the most influential figures in European history. During this time, Toulon was under anti-revolutionary control and had aligned itself with the Bourbons and their British, Spanish, and pro-Bourbon military allies. The city's strategic port posed a significant threat to Paris, prompting an immediate response from revolutionary forces. However, initial attempts to recapture Toulon were plagued by poor leadership from generals Jean Carteaux and Francois Doppet. Recognizing this weakness, Bonaparte skillfully orchestrated political alliances to replace them with General Jacques Dugommier. Under Dugommier's command and guided by Bonaparte's plans, French troops successfully stormed a crucial fort on December 17th. During the intense battle, Bonaparte himself suffered a bayonet wound to his leg but remained undeterred. Less than a day after seizing the fortification, Admiral Lord Hood's British fleet retreated from Toulon harbor on December 18th. Revolutionary troops swiftly reoccupied the city two days later. This triumph not only secured victory for France but also propelled Bonaparte into prominence as he was promoted to general of brigade for his instrumental role in reclaiming Toulon. The print serves as a visual testament to Napoleon's early military prowess and foreshadows his future rise as Emperor of France.
