Panorama of Constantinople and the Dardanelles - the Sublime Porte, 1850. Creator: Unknown

Panorama of Constantinople and the Dardanelles - the Sublime Porte, 1850. Gate to the Imperial Palace and Fountain of Ahmed III. Section of a Panorama, exhibited at 309, Regent-street [in London]...The principal entrance to the palace of the Sultan [is] a solemn, serious, nearly unadorned stone gateway, with semi-columns in the jambs, and crowned by a pointed arch...the rich, yet soft, grey stone colour of the whole is well calculated to give effect to the highly-decorated fountain in front, with its immensely projecting roof...The various figures attendant at the palace, and others seeking water at the fountain, by their varied and picturesque costume, assimilate buildings in such striking contrast. Even in the present multiplicity of panoramas, Mr. Allom's must be estimated as a very attractive addition'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
This panorama, created in 1850 by an unknown artist, showcases a breathtaking view of Constantinople and the Dardanelles, with the Sublime Porte and the Imperial Palace as its focal point. The image, published in the Illustrated London News, offers a glimpse into the grandeur and complexity of the city that was then known as Stamboul or Istanbul. The panorama opens with the imposing gateway to the palace of the Sultan, a solemn and nearly unadorned stone structure with semi-columns in the jambs and a pointed arch. The rich, grey stone color of the gate contrasts beautifully with the highly-decorated fountain of Ahmed III in front, its immensely projecting roof adorned with intricate Islamic motifs. The scene is further enlivened by the various figures attending to the palace and those seeking water at the fountain, their vibrant costumes adding a touch of color and liveliness to the otherwise serene image. The panorama also reveals the city walls and the town beyond, with its maze of streets and structures that speak to the rich history and cultural diversity of Constantinople. The panorama, exhibited at 309, Regent-street in London, was considered an attractive addition to the numerous panoramas of the time, and its publication in the Illustrated London News allowed many people in Britain to experience the wonders of Constantinople from the comfort of their homes. The image remains a testament to the enduring allure of travel and discovery, and to the power of art to transport us to far-off lands and bygone eras.
